European Statistics Day: Good decisions depend on good data
The 20th October 2016 marks the first ever European Statistics Day. The Destatis portal Destatis portal Europe in Figures enables comparisons between countries and regions and provides a quick and easy access to European statistics.
Reliable data is important for the functioning of modern-day societies. Economic, political and social decision makers need high quality statistics to plan for the future.
Data also play an important part in many aspects of european policy: Regional GDP is the key factor when it comes to deciding which regions receive EU subsidies. Eurozone countries face sanctions if their government finance exceeds the agreed debt or deficit limits. Corrective measures can also be triggered, if EU Member States have an extreme trade deficit or surplus over a long time period.
But data also has a profound impact on our everyday lives. Price increases affect our behaviour as consumers, wage levels determine how much we can afford, air pollutants impact on our health. Statistics allow us to measure the degree of change taking place. Eurostat has published a video, which offers some examples of how data influences our daily lives.
