Headline: Pig population in Germany slightly up

WIESBADEN – On reference date 3 November 2016, roughly 27.3 million pigs were kept in Germany, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). According to provisional results of the semi-annual livestock survey, the population increased slightly by 0.5%, or roughly 125,500 pigs, on May 2016. This means that the decrease in the number of pigs observed since November 2014 has been stopped for the time being. The slight increase in the stock of pigs is due to the strong 3.7% growth in the number of pigs for fattening. In the last six months, the stock of pigs for fattening rose from roughly 11.8 million to 12.2 million (+436,900).
