94,000 same-sex couples living together
Since the Committee on Legal Affairs has given its consent, the path is clear for taking a vote on the “marriage for everyone”. As early as this week, the Bundestag might take a decision on whether same-sex marriages are to be allowed.
In 2015 there were roughly 94,000 couples in Germany who lived together as same-sex cohabiting couples. That was an increase by more than half (57%) compared with 10 years earlier (2005: 60,000 couples). Slightly more men than women lived with a partner of the same sex, they accounted for 52% of all same-sex cohabiting couples.
In 2015 somewhat less than half (46%) of all same-sex couples lived in a registered same-sex partnership (43,000 couples). Since 2006 when the marital status was first covered in the microcensus, the number of registered same-sex partnerships has much more than tripled (2006: 12,000 couples).
