2017 apple yield down by half year on year
Due to the extreme weather conditions, the fruit yield in Germany will probably be much smaller in 2017 than in earlier years. According to a first estimate, apple growers expect to harvest approximately 552,000 tonnes of apples. This is a decline of 47% compared with 2016.
Losses will be greatest for apple growers in Baden-Württemberg (-65%), which is followed by Sachsen-Anhalt and Nordrhein-Westfalen with a decline of 59% each. Harvest losses are expected to be smallest in Hamburg, here the estimated decline in yield is 19%.
The adverse weather conditions have also affected other types of fruit: yields of sweet cherries (-43%), sour cherries (-48%), plums/damsons (-47%) and mirabelle plums/greengages (-51%) are expected to fall considerably on the preceding year.
