Headline: Municipalities record financial surplus of 0.6 billion euros in the first half of 2017

WIESBADEN – The core and extra budgets of the municipalities and associations of municipalities (excluding city states) showed a total financial surplus (as defined in public finance statistics) of roughly 0.6 billion euros in the first six months of 2017. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that a deficit of 3.0 billion euros had been recorded in the first half of 2016. For the core budgets, a financial deficit of 0.1 billion euros was recorded in the first six months of 2017; however, it was by 3.3 billion euros lower than the deficit of the same period a year earlier.
