WIESBADEN – 1.7 million people seeking protection were registered in the Central Register of Foreigners (AZR) on 31 December 2017. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the number of people seeking protection registered in the AZR rose by 83,000 (+5%) on the previous year. People seeking protection are foreigners who, referring to humanitarian reasons, are staying in Germany, according to AZR information. Roughly half of them (53%) were registered for the first time in 2015 or 2016.
